CREATIVE LISBON: 8 EVENTS THIS MARCH

 
 

A melting pot for diverse artistic practices and creatives, Lisbon consistently has a rich array of events on offer to inspire and uplift you creatively. With a thriving creative scene and a do-it-yourself art culture, there is a reason so many artists have set up home and workshop alike in this vibrant and colourful city. We’ve distilled 8 creative events happening in March below, so you can reap the most from Lisbon’s artistic scene this month.

 
 
 
 
 
  1. Abetura Livraria das Insurgentes @ Renovar a Mouraria

Livraria das Insurgentes defines itself as a project focusing on the dissemination of feminist books written by women and those oppressed by the cis-hetero-patriarchal system. Alongside their other venues, they have established a new home at the Renovar a Mouraria Association. On the 2nd of March, you can head down to their new space for food, workshops, conversations, music and a fair in their spacious and sunny courtyard.



2. Oli Kellett, photographer and artist, on artistic practice @ Salted Books

Salted Books, one of Lisbon’s many bookshops, launches its art section this month. For a night of conversation on artistic practice, make sure to attend their conversation with Oli Kellett, photographer and artist, from the blue bookshelves of their literary Santos home.



3. Local Market @ Mīrārī

An open-air space dedicated to art, culture and food, this month Mīrārī launches their local market in the Alcantara neighbourhood. The alternative outdoor market is a vibrant melting pot of cultural activities; a collaboration between local producers, designers, musicians and artists alike. Join them on the 10th of March for a lively and culturally rich day.

4. Moda Lisboa @ various venues

For fashion shows, workshops, and exhibitions, look no further than Moda Lisboa / Lisbon Fashion Week. This is a multidisciplinary project focused on the exhibition and development of national fashion designers, promoting the growth of Fashion in Portugal as well as sustainability, craftmanship and the discovery of young talent.  

5. Full Circle Exhibition @ Studio Seco

Opening on the 8th of March, the Full Circle Group Exhibition showcases the works of Raquel Cardoso, Eglė Duleckytė, Jayne Dyer, Francesca Faulin, Nina Fraser, Rebecca Fontaine-Wolf, Mary St. George, and Franka Struys. It is a testament to female solidarity, support and cooperation, exploring women’s bodies, nature’s cycles, and societal norms through interwoven works in an exhibition that uplifts women in art. The perfect exhibition for international Women’s Month.

“To mark International Women’s Day, we come together in Full Circle as a group of 8 female artists from 8 different countries to reimagine an art community which embraces new structures that foster collaboration, diversity, and inclusion.”

6. Monstra Animation Festival @ various venues

Established in 2000, Lisbon’s Monstra Animation Festival strives to celebrate artistic intersection, promoting encounters between people with different artistic backgrounds via animation cinema. A major event in Lisbon’s cultural scene, Monstra also travels around Portugal and the globe, spreading the animation practice to children and adults alike, across borders and cities.

7. Ampla Film Festival @ Culturgest

Ampla Film Festival at Culturgest showcases films that claimed awards in 2023 at prominent national festivals such as Curtas Vila do Conde, IndieLisboa, MOTELX, MONSTRA, and Queer Lisboa, among others. Spanning national and international cinema, and a wide range of genres - from documentaries, to feature films, to animation - this is sure to please all varieties of cinema lovers.

8. Lisboa Frágil @ Museu de Lisboa

At the Pimenta Palace, part of the Museum of Lisbon, a new photography exhibition by Luis Pavão showcases a city undergoing transformation, from the end of the 1970s to the 2000s. Exploring the customs, environments and moments making up Lisbon life, Pavão navigates the different communities that make up the city and traverses the gap between public and private space.
